Excavations at Orce yield a large number of tools made of stone carved by humans

Those responsible for the project consider this campaign to be one of those that has yielded the greatest number of carnivore remains.

The results obtained in the 2024 excavation campaign can be considered the most spectacular in recent years, highlighting the large number of remains of carnivores and proboscideans (ancient elephants), as well as the quality of the carved stone tools. This has been expressed by the delegate of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Fernando Egea and the director of the Orce project, the archaeologist Juan Manuel Jiménez Areas after the second initiative in Venta Micena 4, Barranco León, where the oldest human tooth in Western Europe was recovered and Fuente Nueva 3, the place where the great male mammoth known as the Titan of the Pleistocene died.

Fernando Egea stated that from a general point of view, the 2024 campaign has been a success. The fauna and the carved stone tools found will allow us to advance in the investigation of why Orce was a neuralgic centre for the first settlers of the European continent. Retouched and recycled tools form part of the highlights of this campaign, as well as unusual pieces such as a milk tooth from a mammoth less than a year old. In addition, thanks to the company EXCOM, a new registration system has been set up to allow immediate communication between the specialists at the different sites.

In short, Juan Manuel Jiménez Arenas stated that the latest excavation campaign at the sites in the 'Cuenca de Orce' archaeological zone promises to be a year full of surprises, above all focused on understanding how our most distant ancestors related to the environment and to each other.
