The UGR begins a new archaeological campaign in Orce

The work will cover, among other areas, the southern sector of the Barranco León site, an area particularly rich in fauna and carved lithic industry, and Venta Micena 4, the site with the highest concentration of extinct animals in the region.

Archaeological activities return to Orce during the month of July thanks to a team from the University of Granada led by Juan Manuel Jiménez Arenas, lecturer in the Department of Prehistory and Archaeology. The work of ProyectORCE will take place from Monday 30th June until 20th July and will focus on the three main sites of the Cuenca de Orce Archaeological Zone: Venta Micena 4, a place where the game of life and death took place and an environment with a notable concentration of extinct animals from the region; Barranco León, where the oldest human remains in Western Europe can be found; and Fuente Nueva 3, a spectacular site where Amparito, a female mammoth devoured by humans and sabre-toothed tigers, was unearthed.
